There are all sorts of Project Managers, from those whose sole focus is the structure and the checklist, to those who get excited about the collaboration that a new process requires.  Here at Steele Tile, Inc., a family-owned business, we view Project Management as a mix of functional activities, learning, teaching and problem-solving.  Our Project Managers may or may not have Project Management Certification, but ALL of us have wonderful and horrendous war stories about managing real projects and getting real results!
